Numeracy

To visualize and predict - To play with number - To explore and solve problems - To connect to the word around us

Understanding where our students are at is the foundation of 'Assessment for Learning'. Using a reliable tool is essential to generate data that can be used to plan for instruction, drive our PLC time and measure the growth of students. Below are resources for assessing our students and planning for instruction in response to the assessment.

Early Number Sense  Assessment

Background

The Early Number Sense Assessment was designed by NLPS K-3 teachers in 2018-2019.

*This assessment in still in draft and revisions are currently in progress.

Goal

The goal of the assessment tool is to be a vehicle to have collaborative conversations about students’ number sense and gather meaningful data to inform your planning / teaching.

Note:  The ENSA is intended to be a toolbox of prompts to be used responsively based on the needs of your learners.  Teachers are encouraged to:

  • Offer by strand throughout the year
  • Choose the strands that are most relevant for each learner

Getting Started…

Familiarize yourself with one strand to focus on with the whole class:

  • What materials do you need  for the assessment?
  • Where will you record student responses and teacher observations?
  • Offer tasks to students individually until you feel comfortable offering the task to a small group (1-4 students).

Moving On…

Use the first strand as a guide,

  • Identify the learners you need to know more about.
  • What other strands are you still curious about?
  • What information would be mostful useful to inform your planning / teaching?
  • Choose a tool that aligns with your goals.

Reflection Prompts

Consider using prompts to assist students in completing their reflections.

  • I have learned to pay attention to…
  • It is really important to remember to…
  • I found it challenging to…
  • The next time I … I will remember to…

All of the INA documents can be found on the Island Numeracy Network (INN) website.
