The NLPS Common Formative Assessment- Reading (CFA-R) is a K-3 reading assessment. The assessments are based on end of year learning targets derived from the current BC Curriculum and the Ministry of Education requirements. As the grade increases, the assessment becomes a combination of a formative assessment and a screener.
In 2014, all primary teachers in NLPS gathered to identify the critical skills that are important to teaching reading. Many subtests were considered, but in the end, the assessment represents the most valued components by NLPS teachers, which resulted in our locally-developed assessment tool.
Please note: We are currently updating our assessments and have removed the PARS assessment. The new CFA-Reading assessments will be available on the NLPS Intranet on September 15th, 2025. Please email thelearningline@sd68.bc.ca if you need support or have questions.

The NLPS Grades 8 and 9 reading assessments are formative assessments that are meant to inform instruction at the beginning of the year and to identify learners that may require further instructional action around literacy skills and reading comprehension.
The assessment is intended to be offered at the beginning of the school year to help school teams implement early practices that will support learners in all their classes. The assessment is not intended to be attached to any one class, as literacy skills are cross-curricular.
In the spring, the assessment should be administered again, both to track the progress of implemented interventions, as well as to identify further attention necessary for individual learners.
